[Q] How to avoid System Update wakelock?

Whenever I run a stock/image-based ROM I get a nasty Google Play Services wakelock trying to update the OS. Previously I was able to download an app from the Play Store and re-enable System Update, but that doesn't seem to do the trick anymore.

Any suggestions besides running a bone stock ROM or AOSP/CM-based ROM?
