Confused about root method

I'm coming back to htc from using Samsung for many years. Last htc device was the mogel and don't recall all the s off/s on stuff I'm seeing on the 10. My question is what's needed for rooting and flashing roms yet still have the ability to go 100% stock? I've seen root junkys stuff about unlocking via htcdev and then flashing twrp and root but also read sunshine talked about also. What ways better to go about or is it a mix of both needed?tia
