Huawei Mate 10 May Feature Ambient Display, Double Tap Power/Screen Gestures, and More

We are 4 days away from the official unveiling of the Huawei Mate 10 and its variants: the Mate 10 Pro, Mate 10 Lite, and Mate 10 Porsche Design. These devices will presumably be running Android Oreo with Huawei's EMUI 8.0 on top. Huawei is touting the many AI enhancements they have made on the HiSilicon Kirin 970 and we believe the company plans on using their AI for new camera modes.

But that isn't all that the latest software offering on the Mate 10 has to offer, as they may also bring a Samsung DeX-like interface along with most of the changes found on the Huawei Mate 9's Android Oreo update. Huawei also loves their gestures, packing many different ways you can interact with your phone apart from the touchscreen. On the Huawei Mate 9, for example, you can flip to mute your phone, pick up to reduce incoming phone call ringing volume, raise to your ear to answer calls, take a screenshot with your knuckle, draw on the screen to open apps, or start split-screen with a knuckle gesture.

Existing Gesture Features on the Huawei Mate 9

We now believe that the company may introduce a couple of new gestures/features to the table such as:

  • Double tap power button
  • Double tap screen (already exists in some Huawei phones, but it was absent on the Huawei Mate 9)
  • Double twist gesture (perhaps like the Moto X camera gesture)
  • Ambient Display with lift/double tap to wake

We can't confirm if these features are present in a live build, so our confidence here isn't absolute. At first glance, the inclusion of an Ambient Display feature seems odd considering the fact that the Mate 10 models we know about are rumored to have LCD screens, though it wouldn't be the first time that a manufacturer includes this kind of feature since LG has done it before with their always-on display.

What led us to believe these features may be present on the Huawei Mate 10 is a pre-release firmware build that was leaked to us. When we compared a system dump of the Huawei Mate 9's firmware versus a system dump of the Huawei Mate 10's firmware, a simple files diff between the two phones' Settings.apk file showed new layouts and introductory video files that point to the existence of these features.

Unfortunately, due to the difficulty in decompiling Huawei system APKs we can't post the videos from the build, but we will provide a screenshot of the files diff that we performed.

The firmware I used to obtain this information was provided for me by FunkyHuawei.club, a service which lets you install pre-release Huawei firmwares, recover bricked devices, and rebrand/convert China region phones to international variants. The service will support the Mate 10 upon release.
